EP.3 Making the Grade: How MasteryPrep is Changing the Game for Low-Income Students with Craig Gehring

CoverCraigG-1

Welcome to another exciting episode of “Muddy Waters, Clear Vision”. Imagine a tutoring market that mainly targets high-performing students. That’s where our story begins. Our guest, Craig Gehring, would charge the same rate as cutting grass and saw it as an opportunity to make a difference for low-income students.

1/ Building a business model around serving low-income students wasn’t easy, but Craig was determined.

2/ Louisiana mandated all students to take the ACT. The idea of using a mastery-based approach just made sense. And thus, MasteryPrep was born – a program that has transformed countless lives and opened up new opportunities and choices.

3/ With dedicated instructors and a well-crafted curriculum, MasteryPrep has helped students not only get ready for tests but also have a positive learning experience.

4/ It’s not just about the students. Craig wants his legacy to be much more. He aims to build a company that not only makes a social impact but also helps his team members reach their goals and become successful in their own right.

5/ Early on, Craig brought in a senior manager for guidance. Unfortunately, their “build it, and they will come” mentality didn’t work out as planned. Massive expenses piled up, and Craig realized they had abandoned their responsibility instead of delegating properly.

6/ That experience taught them the importance of being involved in decision-making and having checks and balances. A mentor helped him through this crucial phase.

7/ They had to sell their cherished hat for the company’s survival. But just when things seemed tough, they met someone named Paul. A trusted advisor who had helped them navigate a crisis years ago. Paul understood the struggles of being a founder and the tough decisions it entails.

8/ Paul’s guidance was instrumental in helping Craig navigate the challenges they faced. Now, armed with newfound wisdom, they want to encourage and support other entrepreneurs on their journeys. Starting a business should be based on passion, not just financial gain!

9/ Craig emphasizes taking action and starting your venture. It’s about surrounding yourself with a supportive community that keeps you motivated and accountable for your goals.

10/ MasteryPrep has also improved its hiring process, emphasizing the importance of delivering a social good. They want to attract individuals who genuinely want to make a positive impact, rather than those with just a moral license. Doing good in education requires proactive efforts.

11/ The team at MasteryPrep believes in empowering their members and building consensus on goals. They trust their team, providing latitude to achieve those goals.

With clearly defined values, MasteryPrep remains focused on personal needs and market demands. They provide a unique test prep program solely dedicated to serving school districts, establishing a niche, and achieving goals! Their journey is an inspiration to us all.
